JITP + CoMMENTS

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 The Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy has always endeavored to change what counts as scholarship—and how it is presented, disseminated, and reviewed—by allowing contributors to develop their ideas, publish their work, and engage their readers using multiple formats. However, we have struggled with the structural limitations imposed on our scholarship by traditional peer review practices. While we believe that peer review has much to offer the academic community, and we strive to make the peer review process a generative dialogue between author and reviewer, we acknowledge that the power dynamics built into this dialogue can reproduce the hierarchies of academic gate-keeping. This is especially true when the peer review process is obscured by the final form of an article, making the work of both reviewer and author invisible to its readers.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 We therefore offer this modest experiment with truly public peer review as an alternative. JITP has always been committed first and foremost to teaching and learning, and we intended that the journal itself—both in process and in product—provide opportunities to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practice. In JITP Comments, we hope to reveal and reflect on the peer review process in order to develop a model for better pedagogy in professional practice.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 We hope that you, our colleagues, will contribute to this conversation in the spirit of productive engagement with which it is offered.
